On Saturday October 10th 2015, President Yaya Jammeh of the Gambia allocated huge portions of Gambian lands to foreign movie stars from Nigeria and Ghana. Jammeh who makes a living of giving out state assets and funds since coming to power over 20 years ago, was represented at the give away ceremony by vice president Isatou Njie-Saidy in Banjul. Each of the about a dozen movie stars allocated plots of land, have never lived in the Gambia. In fact, the stars flew into Banjul from their respective countries to pick their land titles and return back to their countries.
In the speech delivered on behalf of the president, the vice president said the gesture was part of the president’s belief in pan africanism, and how Nollywood has helped to showcase our values and heritage on the world stage.
In his response, Mr Francis Duru who led the group, thanked President Jammeh for his generosity and expressed his colleagues gratitude and how humbled, Overwhelmed and honoured they are to receive the plots of land. Mr Duru and his colleagues pledged to work hard to create opportunities for emerging and budding Gambian stars.
The Beneficiaries of the land gifts include Francis Duru, Segun Arinze, Monalisa Chinda,Patience Ozokwor,Eucharia Anunobi,Ejike Asiegbu,Tony Umez, Ngozi Ezeonu, Kanayo O Kanayo, Chika Okpala (Zebrudaya) Harry B Anyanwu, Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme,Rukiat Masud and Ghanaian sultry Actress Jackie Appiah
